JOHN THOMAS TOWERS(1811 – 1857)16th mayor of the district, born at Alexandria, VA to recent immigrants from Bingham, England. Trained as a printer he owned book and printing offices at several locations in D.C. In 1834 he joined the Columbia Typographical Society. He was elected to the city government in 1842 and served until he was elected mayor (1854-1856). During his terms in the city government he worked to develop plans for an infirmary and workhouse on the Marine reservation located on the northeast border of Congressional Cemetery.
