Then fare thee well, our darling boy
Thy smile no longer meets our gaze,
Our hearts no more shall thrill with joy
To hear thy well deserved praise.

Although that little form was dear,
We must submit—‘tis Heaven’s will—
Savior forgive each flowing tear
Bid each repining thought be still.

And grant that we at last may find
With him a home in that abode
Where we shall be forever joined
In singing praises to our God.

  Purcell, William F. d. 22 Dec 1871 R 65 S 139
Purcell. At 11:30 o'clock last evening at his residence in this city, Hon. W.F. Purcell, late Judge of the Orphan's Court, D.C. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, 24th inst. The Evening Star, December 23, 1871 William F. Purcell, formerly judge of the Orphans' Court of the District of Columbia, died at his residence last evening on H street, near the government printing office, after a lingering illness. The deceased was well known in this community having come here in 1844 from Prince William county, Va., of which place he was a native. In 1846 he was appointed judge of the Orphans' Court of this District by President Polk, to succeed Judge Caussine, resigned, and who died shortly after. He presided over that court until 1869, when Congress abolished it, and by the act authorized the appointment of an additional judge of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, and provided that one of the judges of that court should act as probate judge. After being legislated out of office, the Judge's health gradually failed. He leaves a wife and several children, all but one being grown. In the Equity Court this morning his death was announced by Colonel Michael Thompson, who spoke in feeling terms of the deceased. Judge Wylie, after making some appropriate remark ordered that the court be adjourned out of respect to the memory of the deceased. Much has been said and published of alleged weaknesses of Judge Purcell and but little of his good traits of character. It should be said to his credit that in his official capacity he was a man of high integrity, and it was never intimated by his bitterest enemies that he ever was influenced in any judicial act, by personal or mercenary motives. During his term upon the bench is decisions were always characterized by a thorough knowledge of testamentary law, and although several were reversed by the old circuit court of this District it is said that not one which ever reached the supreme court of the United States was reversed by that tribunal. His funeral will take place from his late residence, at 2 1/2 o'clock tomorrow. More
